Government has plans to open more parking garages

There is a little-known entity called Park T-RD, running a program called the National Plan for the Construction of Public Use Parking [Garages], some of which are from 60% to 70% finished, Diario Libre reports.

Obviously, the end game for such a project is to ease traffic congestion in such places as Santo Domingo, and to a lesser extent Santiago, San Francisco de Macoris, and San Cristobal.

The overall plan is to build 16 parking garages, but the initial step is to build just eight.

Some have been finished, such as the one at Atarazana in the Colonial Zone, and the one near the Palace of Justice in East Santo Domingo which is really close to being finished.

Down in the area of the Feria, near the old Indrhi building, they are building another one that is getting near completion. That one is going to have seven levels and is about 70% completed according to the head of the Park T-RD Trust. This one will even have charging stations for electric vehicles. This seven-story parking structure will cost taxpayers more than RD$800 million.

The real monster of a parking place will be the one on Mexico Avenue, next to the Tax Agency offices. It will have 10 stories and will cost RD$2.0 billion.

A series of parking garages near some of the Santo Domingo Metro stations are also in the works.
