In a significant breakthrough, the National Police, working in conjunction with the Public Ministry, the prosecution arm of the Attorney General Office, has successfully recovered a substantial quantity of stolen electrical materials intended for the extension of Santo Domingo’s Metro Line 2, Diario Libre reports. The valuable cables, worth approximately 300,000 euros, were intercepted just as they were about to be shipped out of the country, reportedly bound for China.
The recovery comes as construction on the Metro line extension to Los Alcarrizos enters its final stages.
According to the investigation, the theft occurred on 8 June 2025. Authorities allege that a security employee at the warehouse, in collaboration with Enercido Viola Familia, a former security employee, and Jonathan Enmanuel Vásquez Núñez, conspired to disable the electrical breakers. This action plunged the facility into darkness, effectively blinding surveillance cameras and allowing the perpetrators to enter undetected.
Under the cover of darkness, the suspects allegedly drove a truck into the warehouse and made off with two massive spools of 120-square-millimeter sustaining cables and one 120-square-millimeter contact wire.
“During the investigation, on 13 June, under search warrant No. 2025-AJ0037715, police agents, along with the Public Ministry, arrived at the commercial establishment ‘Reciclaje M&M’ on Calle La Española near República de Colombia Avenue, where they recovered the entirety of the stolen electrical material, just as the company of one of the participants was about to load it onto the dock with a destination to China,” stated a National Police press release.
Further details regarding arrests or charges related to the incident were not immediately available.
