President Abinader inaugurates boardwalk in Haina

President Luis Abinader on Sunday, 22 June 2025 officially inaugurated the new Malecón de Haina, a long-anticipated development that is set to transform the southcentral coastal area of Haina into a modern public space for recreation, sports, and economic activity. Haina is an industrial area where now its resident and working population can enjoy the gorgeous views.

Speaking at the ribbon-cutting ceremony, President Abinader reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the comprehensive development of the municipality. He highlighted several infrastructure projects already completed with efficient use of public funds, including investments in technical education, green spaces, and improved transportation networks.

“Our government is committed to responsible budget management and prioritizing projects that genuinely improve the quality of life for Dominican families,” Abinader said.

As part of the broader development plan, the President also announced the future opening of an ecological park on state-owned land, designed for working families to enjoy nature and leisure activities. He further confirmed that the Haina cable car (Teleférico) line would be extended to Quita Sueño by 2027 and that new infrastructure—such as a pedestrian bridge and a breakwater—would be added to enhance the boardwalk.

Tourism Minister David Collado emphasized that the project is part of a national effort to revitalize public coastal spaces with transparency and community focus. The Presidency reports that the Malecón de Haina, completed at a cost of over RD$107 million, offers residents a dignified space for recreation and supports the area’s local development.

Collado credited the transformation to President Abinader’s direct support. He noted similar public space recovery efforts have been successfully carried out in the National District, Santo Domingo Este, San Pedro de Macorís, La Romana, Samaná, and Cabrera, in María Trinidad Sánchez province.

Highlighting the role of community engagement and open governance, Collado said the country is experiencing its best tourism moment yet with a goal of 12 million visitors this year. Collado is a contender for the ruling PRM political party’s presidential candidacy in the next 2028 general elections.

Haina’s Mayor, Osvaldo Rodríguez, described the inauguration as a historic milestone for the municipality. “This marks a before and after for Haina,” he said, expressing gratitude for the unwavering support of President Abinader and Minister Collado in bringing the project to fruition.
