Julia Simpson, president and CEO of the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), is highly optimistic about the Dominican Republic’s tourism future. She predicts the nation will solidify its position as the leading tourism destination in Central America and the Caribbean in both 2025 and 2026.
In an exclusive interview with Diario Libre, Simpson shared her insights on the global tourism landscape and the Dominican Republic’s prominent role within it.
“Global tourism is advancing strongly,” Simpson stated. “By the end of 2025, the sector is projected to contribute an impressive US$11.7 trillion to the global GDP, accounting for 10% of the world’s total,” says Simpson.
She says the Dominican Republic is poised for historic tourism growth. For the Dominican Republic, 2025 is shaping up to be a landmark year. “The tourism sector is expected to generate over US$21 billion, equivalent to 15.8% of its GDP, representing a nearly 23% increase from its previous peak,” Simpson told Diario Libre. “This reinforces its position as a regional leader and a destination with a very promising future,” she added.
Furthermore, she anticipates the sector will support close to 893,000 jobs, making up 17.9% of the national workforce.
Simpson highlighted a significant opportunity for Caribbean destinations amidst evolving traveler expectations. “The shift in traveler preferences is a unique chance for the Caribbean,” she explained. “Destinations that can offer authentic experiences, integrating local communities and protecting their environment, will be the most valued.”
She emphasized that this approach not only diversifies the tourism economy but also improves the distribution of benefits and preserves the region’s natural and cultural capital. “A real commitment to sustainability is now a key competitive factor,” Simpson asserted.
