President Luis Abinader decreed public mourning on Wednesday, 16 July 2025 for the passing away of former National District Mayor Rafael Suberví Bonilla. Suberví Bonilla was twice mayor of Santo Domingo — 1986-1990 and 1994-1998., during the terms of the late President Joaquin Balaguer.

He was also a former Minister of Tourism in the governments of Salvador Jorge Blanco (1982-1986) and that of Hipolito Mejia (2001-2004).

During his first term as Minister of Tourism he made the Calle El Conde a pedestrian street.

Architect Marcos Barinas credits Suberví with the passing of Resolution 94-98 that created the Poligono Central, today the most important residential and commercial area of the capital city.

Suberví was a high-ranking officer in the PRD, the precursor of the ruling PRM political party. His son, Felipe Antonio Suberví (Fellito) is the current director of Santo Domingo Water Corporation (CAASD).

He is mourned at the Blandino Funeral Home and will be buried with honors on Thursday, 17 July 2025.
