In a move aimed at boosting tourism and cultural exchange, Argentina has announced that Dominican citizens holding a valid United States visa will no longer need to apply for an Argentine visa for tourism purposes. The new resolution, published on 18 July 2025, streamlines entry for Dominicans, allowing for stays of up to 90 days. The start date has yet to be announced.
Meanwhile, the official resolution, detailed in Article 1, states: “Entry without an Argentine consular visa or Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) is authorized for foreign nationals of the Dominican Republic, holders of ordinary passports, when such entry occurs with the presentation of a valid and current visa for entry into the United States of America corresponding to a similar migratory category.”
This new measure applies exclusively to tourism and permits a maximum stay of 90 days in Argentine territory. It’s important to note that visitors will not be allowed to change their migratory status during their stay. However, the possibility of a single extension for a similar period may be considered, subject to evaluation by the Argentinean Migration Agency.
The Argentine Embassy in Santo Domingo had previously indicated its support for such a decision, citing the reciprocal benefit already extended by the Dominican Republic to Argentine citizens. This latest flexibilization, according to the resolution, seeks to “facilitate tourist and cultural exchanges between both countries.”
The Argentinean Migration Agency is responsible for implementing the necessary technical and administrative mechanisms to put this resolution into effect. As reported, the new policy will officially commence the day after its publication in the Official Gazette of the Argentine Republic.
With this decision, Argentina joins a growing list of nations that acknowledge the US visa as a sufficient criterion for security and migratory control, thereby simplifying international travel for Dominican citizens and fostering mutual tourism.
The visa flexibility had been tops on the list of bilateral topics of the Dominican Republic with Argentina. Currently, the Argentina visa costs US$150 and US$400 for VIP and requires the presentation of extensive documentation. At a time when there is an increase in low cost direct flights to Argentina (Arajet), the visa requirement was an obstacle to increased travel by Dominicans to Argentina.
The Argentinean government at the same time has facilitated Chinese travel to Argentina. “The decision to facilitate the arrival of Chinese and Dominican tourists is part of the measures promoted by President Javier Milei to dismantle the barriers that have long hindered the free development of the national economy—of which tourism is a strategic sector,” stated Daniel Scioli, Argentina’s Secretary of Tourism, Environment, and Sports.
Scioli had discussed this issue in meetings with the Dominican Republic’s Minister of Tourism, David Collado, and the country’s ambassador to Argentina, Jorge Marte Báez.
The Argentinean government explained that the basis for waiving the consular visa requirement lies in trusting the control mechanisms implemented by certain countries during their visa issuance process. In cases where travelers have already been granted visas by countries with strict security standards—according to Argentine authorities—this prior vetting is considered sufficient, eliminating the need for duplicate checks by Argentine consular officials.
