Capital city mayor supervises works for Paseo Marítimo Malecón on Santo Domingo along city’s waterfront

National District Mayor Carolina Mejía recently inspected progress on the Paseo Marítimo of Santo Domingo, a sprawling sports and recreation complex set to transform 1.7 kilometers of the city’s iconic waterfront. The project, a key component of the Integrated Plan for Santo Domingo, aims to create accessible and functional spaces for various sports and leisure activities.

Adding to its appeal, the Paseo Marítimo is planned as a bio-healthy zone facing the ocean, commercial, recreational and sports areas, all with scenic viewpoints. The project also thoughtfully integrates the Monument to the Heroes of May 30, a significant historical landmark.

In a video shared by the Mayor’s office, Mejía was seen reviewing plans and observing the redesign of the beach volleyball court, discussing projections for the expansive area. She was accompanied by Yolanda de la Rosa, director of Innovation and Special Projects, during her tour of the boardwalk.

The Paseo Marítimo is complemented by the Malecón Deportivo, where new facilities for the Central American and Caribbean Games are underway, close by on the north side of the Malecon.

The new sports area will offer a diverse range of facilities, including a skatepark, basketball courts, beach volleyball courts, and soccer fields. Families will also benefit from dedicated children’s areas, along with covered grandstands, restrooms, and food vendor spaces.
