High-level US government mission visits Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic received members of the United States National Security Council and the US Department of Defense last week. These high-ranking members of the Trump administration met with President Luis Abinader and several Dominican ministers. The visit will come to a conclusion tomorrow, 26 August.

Michael Jensen, a former United States Air Force Lt. Colonel, is the senior director for the Western Hemisphere at the National Security Council (NSC), and Joseph M. Humire is a Bolivian-American, who is an expert in the field of national security and terrorism. Humire is currently the Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for the Western Hemisphere.

Joseph M. Humire is the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Western Hemisphere Affairs, overseeing US defense and security policy for Canada, Mexico, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean. He previously served as the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Homeland Defense Integration and Defense Support of Civil Authorities, leading DoD’s support to federal law enforcement and sealing the southern border.

The two high-ranking US government officials met with Minister of Foreign Relations, Roberto Alvarez as well as President Abinader and other diplomats. The central theme of the talks was bilateral cooperation on such areas as security, defense, and strategic development.

The Dominican Republic’s main problem today is the national threat gang control in Haiti represents for the country.

Other meetings were held with the Minister of Energy and Mines, Joel Santos, and the Minister of Commerce, Victor (Ito) Bisono. At least part of the agenda covered aspects of the Summit of the Americas that will take place in the first week of December in Punta Cana this 2025.
