Gisselle Valera Florencio named president of Barrick Pueblo Viejo

The largest mining company operating in the Dominican Republic, Barrick Pueblo Viejo announced the appointment of Gisselle Valera Florencio as president.

Barrick Pueblo Viejo’s operation in Sanchez Ramirez provinces is regarded as one of the world’s leading tier one gold mines. The Ministry of Environment has cleared the construction of a second tailings dam in the province for expanding gold production.

Valera Florencio had been carrying out the role after the resignation of Juana Barcelo.

A corporate lawyer, before her new appointment she had served as executive director for government affairs for Central America and the Caribbean at Barrick Pueblo Viejo. Previously, she worked for the Jimenez Peña law firm in Santo Domingo.

Valera Florencio reports directly to Barrick’s Chief Operating Officer for Latin America and Asia Pacific, Mark Hill.

A company press release explains that Valera Florencio has more than 16 years of experience in government relations, energy regulation and both domestic and cross-border transactions.

“The Dominican Republic is a strategic country for Barrick and our commitment is to continue contributing to its economic development while promoting responsible and sustainable operations that generate shared value for all,” said Valera Florencio.

The press release explains that since beginning commercial production in 2013, Barrick Pueblo Viejo has contributed more than US$3.6 billion in direct and indirect taxes, consolidating its role as a key driver of the Dominican economy.

The company currently employs more than 3,000 direct employees and more than 4,000 contractor employees, with nearly half from Sánchez Ramírez province.
