Wrong decisions in electricity sector bring back blackouts

Economist Jaime Aristy Escuder outlines for Diario Libre the reason why the blackouts are back. Bottom line, the Abinader administration did not make the right decisions regarding plans for investing in power generation to meet the growing local demand. The Abinader administration chose instead to back private investors in the Manzanillo power complex in the northwest and fill in the void with the contracting of power barges known for their high cost of generation and polluting of local waters. Making matters worse, bad decisions made by those appointed to the government utilities have resulted in a deficit of US$1.8 billion.
