Power outage at terminal disrupts flight operations at SDQ

Major delays occurred at Las Americas International Airport (SDQ) caused by a power outage on Sunday, 21 September 2025. The Vinci-managed Aerodom airport reported that at least 20 flights were affected. Diario Libre publishes that 30 flights were impacted. Several flights were detoured to the airports of Santiago and Punta Cana.

The power outage began at 9:18am and immediately impacted airport operations. Luis José López, Aerodom’s Communications Director, confirmed that several flights had to be rerouted and departures and arrivals faced delays. Flights were resumed gradually after 2:40pm, El Nacional reported. The power service was fully restored at 6:05pm, Aerodom announced, as reported in Listin Diario.

Aerodom reported that power was first restored to the southern section of the terminal later in the day, with work continuing to fix the circuits in the northern part of the building. In a statement, the company noted, “Operations will return to normal gradually,” and advised passengers to check with their airlines for updated flight information.

The Airport Department has since launched an investigation into the incident and requested a report from Aerodom to determine the cause of the outage. A statement from the department indicated that the cut was due to a failure in an internal electrical switch and was not related to the external power grid.

Listin Diario reported that operations continued at the control tower where backup systems kicked in, allowing for landings and departures throughout the entire nine hours that the power disruption lasted.

The media said that it appeared that the airport was operating without a complete power backup system at the terminal.
