Omsa halts vehicle loans amidst audit

The Metropolitan Office of Bus Services (Omsa) has temporarily suspended borrowing for the purchase of its vehicles on its routes, citing a comprehensive legal and administrative audit. The agency announced the measure, which it says is a move toward improving the quality of its services, as reported in Diario Libre. The measure is one of the first announced by Omsa, now under highly-reputed Oneximo Gonzalez.

In a press release, Omsa stated it “appeals to the understanding of all who have historically benefited from a unit of the institution to carry out some institutional, social, or other activity.” The agency noted that it hopes to reinstate the service once the audit is complete.

Onéximo González, Omsa’s executive vice president, confirmed the suspension aims to prevent inconveniences for those who might request vehicles, as no requests can be fulfilled at this time.

González emphasized that the suspension will not affect regular bus services for the public. Instead, he said the move allows for a detailed review of vehicle loan terms to prevent misuse and protect state assets.

“As a public company recently transformed by Decree 167-23, Omsa seeks to adopt a commercial and efficient vision, prioritizing the maintenance of its fleet of buses… for the fixed metropolitan urban transport corridors, which benefit thousands of users daily,” González said.

Gonzalez is known as one of the leading Dominican Republic’s leading ground transport sector experts.
