The Dominican Agro-business Board (JAD) and the Ministry of Agriculture have joined forces to promote the cultivation, processing and sale of “Buen Pan” or breadfruit in the Dominican Republic. Given the rising global demand for organic and health foods, there is a demand for this Pacific island fruit that came to the Caribbean in the 17th Century.
Osmar Benitez, the head of the JAD, and Eulalio Ramirez, from the Ministry of Agriculture participated in the II Breadfruit Congress and Festival. The Deputy Minister of Agriculture said that over 6000 tareas had been planted this year, and that exports of 3600 tons had produced over US$3.0 million.
For his part, Benitez said that the JAD would continue to support the continued production and consumption of the fruit, noting that it is a sustainable, nutritious and economically feasible crop that will provide food security and economic development to the Dominican Republic.
