The Dominican Republic has positioned itself as a regional leader in green financing and climate action following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry of Environment and Mamaland Company S.A. (Grupo Mota-Engil). The agreement outlines a potential investment of US$300 million (RD$18 billion) for ambitious projects focused on ecological restoration, carbon credits, and environmental conservation across the country.
The landmark initiative was facilitated through the diplomatic efforts of the Dominican Ambassador to Portugal, Patricia Villegas de Jorge. The ambassador emphasized the significance of the agreement, stating that it “positions the country as a regional benchmark for green financing and climate action.”
The MoU encompasses extensive studies and development plans in critical areas, including:
• Degraded lands
• Mangroves and wetlands
• Protected zones
Beyond environmental recovery, the partnership is designed to deliver substantial socioeconomic benefits. Key objectives include generating green employment opportunities, facilitating technology transfer, strengthening institutional capabilities, and promoting social responsibility and training for rural communities.
