Dominican contemporary art exhibition opens in Rome

The Embassy of the Dominican Republic to the Holy See, in coordination with the Instituto Cervantes in Rome, is presenting “Routes of Hope: Contemporary Dominican Art” (Rutas de Esperanza), a major collective exhibition celebrating the creative power and dynamism of modern Dominican artists.

The exhibition is strategically timed to coincide with the highly significant 2025 Vatican Jubilee Year.

The exhibition is set to be inaugurated on Thursday, 20 November 2025, at 6pm in the prestigious Sala Dalí of the Instituto Cervantes, located in the emblematic Piazza Navona. The piazza, a major draw for pilgrims and tourists during the Jubilee, ensures maximum international visibility for the artwork. The exhibition will remain open to the public until 10 January 2026.

Curated by Julian Kunhardt, the exhibition features works by a distinguished roster of artists, including Soraya Abu Naba’a, Guadalupe Casasnovas, Robert Castillo, Simón de los Santos, Jared Guerra Mirabal, Melanio Guzmán, Lizander Jiménez, Vanessa Languasco, Priscila López Loyo, Iris Pérez, Yermine Richardson, Victoria Thomen, Ruddy Taveras, and Juan Trinidad. Italian curator Rita Cerciello will provide special collaboration for the installation of Juan Trinidad’s sculptures.

A dialogue between the sacred and the contemporary

“Routes of Hope” facilitates a powerful dialogue between contemporary plastic language and the spiritual dimension inherent in the Jubilee Year. Using Caribbean colors, compelling symbolism, migratory narratives, and intimate explorations of identity, the artists delve into universal themes such as faith, memory, resilience, intercultural coexistence, and the human being’s inner journey.

The artistic proposal blends the sacred with modernity, allowing hope to serve as an emotional bridge capable of transcending cultural boundaries. Each piece invites the viewer to connect with stories and experiences that, while rooted in the Caribbean, resonate on a universal level.

Dominican Republic to the Holy See, Victor Suarez emphasizes the exhibition’s significance as a commitment to national cultural promotion.

“As ambassador, I take on the commitment to promote Dominican culture and strengthen the ties between our nations,” states Ambassador Suárez. “We deeply thank the Instituto Cervantes for their collaboration and support, as well as every artist exhibiting their work. Their talent projects our identity in a space as significant as the Eternal City, Rome. Together, we are building a bridge of dialogue and encounter that will enrich our communities and foster a deeper understanding between our peoples.”
