Police Christmas holiday security operation launched

The National Police is sending extra patrols to city streets to prevent crime now that millions will have extra cash for the holidays. Minister of Interior and Police Faride Raful says 27,000 police and military are part of the specially trained holiday patrols.

Christmas is a month when people get paid at least two monthly wages, meaning there is lots of extra cash in circulation.

Major General Ramón Antonio Guzmán Peralta, director general of the Police, said that surveillance is being enhanced in commercial zones, major avenues and residential areas, transportation terminals and public spaces and tourist destinations.

The primary goal of the extra patrols is to proactively prevent crimes and maintain public order during the busy holiday season, which is marked by high commercial activity due to the influx of the Christmas bonus funds.

Guzmán Peralta added that this substantial deployment is a key component of the ongoing police transformation and modernization process, which involves upgrading equipment and professionalizing the force.

Interior and Police Minister Faride Raful also addressed the public, issuing a direct call for citizen co-responsibility. She stressed that security is not solely the domain of law enforcement but also depends on the “everyday decisions” made by the populace.
