Save the cookies!

The executive vice president of the Dominican Republic Association of Industries (AIRD) has come out in defense of the local cookie and cracker industry. The different local manufacturers have asked the Commission for the Defense of Commerce (CDC) to look into the possibility of implementing a safeguard measure against imported cookies and crackers from countries with which the Dominican Republic does not have a free trade agreement. The AIRD executive, Mario Pujols, also noted that the process must follow the rules already laid out.

Local industry has filed the request to investigate the situation according to the parameters laid out in Law 1-02 that cover Illegal Practices in Commerce. As reported, local sales of bargain-priced “Danish” cookies manufactured in Malaysia and India are big items during the Christmas holidays.
