It is customary, in the Dominican Republic to choose a name for the newborn that is either that of a famous person, or place, or a combination of family names. Examples such as Zelandia, Asia, and Rafalta (for Rafael and Altagracia) are fairly common. There are even cases of children named Hitler, Mussolini, Elvis, Ho Chi, and Lenin.
Over time, the themes of the names have been changing. According to the records of the Civil Registry Department at the Central Electoral Board (JCE), in 2025, the most popular new names or name-combinations for babies in the Dominican Republic were Mia Isabela for little girls and Liam Alexander for the boys.
Other popular names for girls were Adhara Sofia, Emma Sofia, Adhara Michelle, Zoe Valentina, and combinations using Sophia, Emma, and Adhara. For the boys, other names were combinations using Liam, Angel, Jose, Gael, and Manuel, along with strange spellings such as Eyden for Aiden, and Eithan for Ethan.
