Results of a Gallup-Hoy poll indicate that 52.6% believe drug trafficking has penetrated the DR because of complicity between drug dealers and the authorities. 80.4% of those polled believe that drug trafficking is on the rise. Interestingly, 92% of polled citizens who have higher education studies think that drug trafficking has increased.

To support the statement, 70% of adults of voting age in the DR believe fugitive money-laundering suspect Sobeida Felix Morel escaped with the help of the authorities. Only 12% perceive her disappearance as the result of negligence by the authorities. Sobeida Felix is linked to Jose Figueroa Augusto, a Puerto Rican drug trafficker who is also a fugitive from Puerto Rican justice.

56% described the DNCD, the Police and the National Drug Council, prosecutors and judges’ efforts in fighting drug trafficking as “positive”.

83.1% said they were against legalizing drugs in the country.
