The ASTA Globes (American Society of Travel Advisors) granted the Dominican Republic its ASTA International Destination Partner of the Year Awad during the awards ceremony held on 22 January 2026, at the Palmer House in Chicago, USA. The ASTA Globes Awards recognize professional excellence, focusing specifically on the value and integrity of travel advisors rather than just consumer popularity.
The ASTA Globes were established to move beyond traditional tourism awards. They focus on professional integrity, innovation, and advocacy. For travelers, these winners serve as a “trusted benchmark,” identifying professionals who offer expert guidance and dependable support in an increasingly complex global travel environment.
Zane Kerby, CEO of ASTA, stated that the ASTA award winners represent “the best partners of our industry who invest in professionalism… and move our community forward through action and integrity.”
Winning the International Destination Partner of the Year award at the 2026 ASTA Globes is a major milestone for the Dominican Republic. It signifies more than just a “best of” list; it marks the country’s official recognition as the world’s leading partner for the professional travel advisor community.
The award specifically recognizes the Dominican Republic’s solid track record of collaboration with travel agents. Unlike consumer-voted awards, this was voted on by the members of the American Society of Travel Advisors (ASTA). It validates the Ministry of Tourism’s (MITUR) focus on making the country “agent-friendly” through training, high commissions, and reliable ground support.
By beating out other major global competitors, the DR has solidified its status as the “anchor” international destination for the U.S. market, which remains its most vital source of tourism revenue.
Industry analysts noted that the award reflects the country’s successful pivot toward high-value segments. The recognition was supported by the DR’s growth in luxury tourism, the positioning of the country as a professional hub for meetings and sports and sustainability, with an increase in authentic cultural experiences and eco-tourism initiatives that appeal to modern, conscious travelers.
The award was received for the Dominican Republic by Fernando Abreu, director of Airline Relations and Air Connectivity; Karina Ramos, director of the OPT (Tourism Promotion Office) New York.
and Raquel Reyes & Deborah Rodríguez, directors of the Orlando and Chicago OPTs.
