Abinader returns from Dubai and takes time to open two sports facilities in Puerto Plata

In a move aimed at bolstering youth development and athletic infrastructure, President Luis Abinader inaugurated two modern indoor multi-use sports complexes in Puerto Plata on Sunday, 8 February 2026. The day before he had been in Dubai promoting investments for the Dominican Republic.

The sports venues in Puerto Plata represent a combined government investment of more than RD$76 million, the Presidency reports.

The facilities serve two of the province’s prominent athletic organizations: the Gustavo Behall Club, completed at a cost of RD$38.6 million, and the Gregorio Luperón Club, which saw an investment of RD$37.4 million. Both projects were executed under the supervision of the Ministry of Sports (Miderec).

Minister of Sports Kelvin Cruz described the initiative as a “sports revolution” for the region. He noted that the administration has committed over RD$300 million to build seven such facilities across the province to fulfill long-standing demands from local athletes.

The facilities are designed to meet international standards and accommodate both high-level competitions and community events. The new constructions are fitted with FIBA-certified maple wood flooring and professional backboards and digital scoreboards and integrated clock systems.

Local leaders expressed significant gratitude during the ceremony. Edgar Mirabel, president of the Gregorio Luperón Club, emphasized that the community views these facilities as a transformative step for local sports. Provincial Governor Claritza Rochtte added that the fully equipped centers are a realization of a vision to provide youth with safe, modern spaces for recreation and training.

The event was attended by several high-ranking officials, including Administrative Minister of the Presidency José Ignacio Paliza, Tourism Minister David Collado, and Puerto Plata Senator Ginette Bournigal, alongside local municipal authorities.

These inaugurations mark the 37th and 38th sports projects delivered during Minister Cruz’s current tenure, signaling a continued focus on expanding the country’s athletic infrastructure.
