Date set for Santo Domingo Metro Line 2C to begin operation

After two years of delays, the 2C extension of the Santo Domingo Metro is set to begin operations for the general public on 24 February 2026.

As the first metro line built under President Luis Abinader’s administration, the project broke ground in February 2022. The 7.3-kilometer stretch, which connects the María Montez station at Kilometer 9 of the Duarte Highway to the Los Alcarrizos municipality, was originally scheduled to open in February 2024.

The government has attributed the significant delays to a decentralized construction strategy, which involved dividing the project among more than 30 different contractors. While officials intended for this approach to distribute the workload across multiple local companies, it led to logistical challenges and timeline setbacks. Additionally, the quality of construction has remained under public scrutiny throughout the process.

Despite these hurdles, the Presidency and the Minister of the Presidency, José Ignacio Paliza, have confirmed that the line will finally open its doors this month. The inauguration is expected to coincide with the festivities surrounding National Independence Day (February 27), marking a major infrastructure milestone for the current government.

As reported, the service will be free to users through 5 April, the end of Easter Week.
