Spirit Airlines shuts down operations in Dominican Republic, JetBlue offers a good deal to stranded passengers

In response to the sudden shutdown of Spirit Airlines on 1 May 2026, JetBlue introduced two primary “rescue” programs to assist stranded passengers. The shutdown impacted hundreds of passengers that would have flown out of Las Americas International in Santo Domingo.

The airline encourages travelers to take advantage of the most aggressive discounts, acting by 5 May 2026.

JetBlue is offering a flat US$99 one-way fare (including government taxes and fees) for passengers who were scheduled to fly on Spirit, valid for travel through Wednesday, 6 May. The deal is only available by calling 1-800-JETBLUE (1-800-538-2583) to speak with an agent who needs to verify the Spirit confirmation. The booking deadline establishes that the special fares are expected to expire on Tuesday, 5 May 2026.

Likewise, for those who cannot book by the rescue deadline or who are traveling slightly later in the week, JetBlue has capped prices on specific high-traffic routes. Blue Basic fares are capped at US$299 or less for nonstop routes that overlap with former Spirit service. The caps are specifically targeted at flights to and from Fort Lauderdale (FLL) and San Juan (SJU).

JetBlue has also extended support to Spirit pilots and flight attendants who may be stranded and is honoring Spirit crew jump seat privileges for the next two weeks (subject to availability) to help them get home. JetBlue also announced plans to offer priority interview opportunities to qualified Spirit team members impacted by the shutdown.

Spirit announced the shutdown citing surging jet fuel costs as a result of the Iran conflict. Spirit had sought to merge with JetBlue, but the deal met with US government opposition.
