Listin Diario reports that more than 6,000 persons are in jail for drug trafficking in the DR, which is 30% of those in jail. There are 19,726 persons in jail. Of these 5,900 are for drug trafficking, 5,345 for murder (27.1%), 3,945 for robbery (20%), 1,500 (for rape), among other charges. The statistics of the Department of Prisons shows that of those in jail on drug charges, 4,000 await completion of their judicial processes. Of those in jail on drug charges, 90.6% are Dominicans and 9.4% are foreigners, and 56.2% are 25 to 39 years old, 26.4% are 18 to 24 years old and 16.9% are 40 to 59 years old.
