Dominicans lead in green cards

Of the 1.1 million people who got green cards to the US in 2009, the Dominican Republic was the fifth country of birth of the new immigrants. Mexico leads with 15% of immigrants, followed by China, the Philippines, India and the DR, each of which accounted for 4-6% of the new immigrants, according to Homeland Security statistics.

Of the total, 37% come from Asia and 31% from North America.

Most of the new immigrants settled in California (20%), New York (13%), Florida (11%), Texas (8%) and New Jersey (5%).

Interestingly, most of the new immigrants are women (54.6%), 58% are married. The new median age of immigrants is 31.
