DR and CAFTA shows big deficit

The Dominican Republic has a growing trade deficit with Central America and the United States, with which it signed the DR-CAFTA agreement. The Ministry of Foreign Relations recently announced that the statistics were now available online.

Last year the DR exported US$4,693,200,000 to DR CAFTA countries and imported well over US$12 billion. Diario Libre reports that imports last year were less than those in 2008, when they reached US$16.3 billion.

At the same time, Dominican exports fell by US$924.2 million in 2009 compared to 2008, going from US$5,617,400,000 to US$4,693,200,000.
