A drop in the bucket

The growing concern for the water supply shortage in the major cities and highly populated areas is prompting grand efforts to modify the wasteful water consumption habits of the general population. Nevertheless, these attempts seem ineffectual considering the revelation that only 60 percent of the water distributed by the CAASD, Santo Domingo?s water and sewage department, is used by consumers. The rest of the water is lost, mainly due to leaks in cisterns. There are over 150,000 cisterns in Santo Domingo and the CAASD estimates that 70 percent of them allow water to escape due to structural damages. According to the CAASD, there needs to be a better understanding of which materials to use to build the water deposits to avoid leakage.
