Ex-consul and deputy for La Vega safe for now

In one of the most talked-about cases in recent memory, the deputy for La Vega, Radhames Garcia, is again safe, under the protection of parliamentary immunity. Garcia is accused of trafficking illegal aliens under the auspices of his post of Dominican Consul in Haiti (Cap Haitian), and was immune from arrest while the legislature was in session. When the legislature’s regular session ended last Sunday, he apparently went into hiding. He was spared prosecution, however, when President Mejia called a special session of the National Congress that will proceed from 15 January until 15 February. According to the new Attorney General, Victor Cespedes, as soon as the special session ends, Garcia will be prosecuted according to the law.
