El Nacional reports today that the employees at the Instituto Postal Dominicano (Inposdom), the post office, went on strike today demanding their wages for November, December and the first half of January.
Ultima Hora newspaper reported yesterday that employees at the ministries of Health, Agriculture, Education, Sports, Public Works, Foreign Relations, Tourism, Interior & Police, and the Armed Forces had not collected their wages. The checks for the first half of the month were due 12 January.
President Mejia justified the delay explaining that the 2003 budget had not been approved in time for payday, last 12 January. By law the government operates automatically on the previous year budget until the new budget is passed.
