Santiago airport success story

Diario Libre reports on the successful first year of the Aeropuerto Internacional del Cibao, located on the outskirts of Santiago de los Caballeros, the second largest city in the Dominican Republic. The newspaper says that the number of arrivals has tripled with 43,290 passengers arriving at the new Santiago up from 13,969 travelers at the old Santiago terminal. The peak travel seasons were in July (8,847 travelers) and December (8,470 travelers).
According to Diario Libre, the airport has also handled considerable amounts of apparel cargo, in addition to fresh vegetables and flowers out of nearby Constanza and Jarabacoa.
A private consortium that includes the Pontificia Universidad Catolica Madre y Maestra built the terminal at a cost of RD$700 million. It has the capacity to handle 20,000 travelers per month and 80 flights per day. It currently receives scheduled flights from the United States and Puerto Rico.
