800,000 housing units needed

According to the National Planning Office (ONAPLAN), there are 2 million homes in the Dominican Republic and there are qualitative and quantitative needs for an additional 800,000 units.
ONAPLAN, in a full-page article in today?s Listin Diario, says that a lack of potable water and basic sanitation needs are responsible for the large deficit of acceptable housing. The planning office showed that in 1970 the number of households with dirt floors accounted for 36 percent of all homes, but that by 1988 the amount decreased to just 8 percent. Nevertheless, the ONAPLAN also pointed out that there is an incremental need for 30,000 new units each year.
