Money in circulation

El Caribe reports that 69.77% of all bills in the Dominican Republic are in 2,000 and 1,000 denominations. Of these, 41% are 2,000 peso bills, up from 38% in 2010 and 35% in 2006. Nevertheless, El Caribe reports that the high denominations are not welcome in many businesses that often do not have change. RD$100 bills barely make up 5.3% of money in circulation, which explains the lack of small bills.

According to the Central Bank’s third quarter statistical bulletin, as of 30 September there was RD$63,579 million in circulation, of which RD$26,140.2 million were two thousand peso bills. The report does not give the breakdown for RD$500 and RD$1,000 bills.

The breakdown of money in circulation as of 30 September 2011, as reported in El Caribe is:

RD$5: RD$606.8 million
