President Hipolito Mejia has called for an ?immediate review? of the contracts between the Dominican government and the mining and exploration companies. Mejia says that he feels the different companies have not put enough effort into the fulfillment of their contracts and that a relaunch in the search for alternative energy measures is ?unavoidable?. In a document released yesterday at the National Palace by Pedro Vasquez, the head of mining, and Miguel de Pe?a, of the Corporate Mining Unit, President Mejia expressed that he was worried by the ?slow pace of the work being done by the explorers looking for natural gas and petroleum in our country?.
Companies such as Once Once, Mobile and Maleno have contractual obligations to sink one well per year, but some of these companies have only sunk one well in eleven years.
