Focus on corruption

The Hoy and Listin Diario newspapers have somewhat conflicting stories on just what is happening with corruption cases pending in the court system. Hoy headlines that the Attorney General is reactivating the corruption cases, citing a promise made by Attorney General Victor Cespedes that there would be a ?downpour? of case files in the next few days. Cespedes told Hoy reporter Diego Pesqueira that the people accused should be ready to spend a long time in jail, as the cases are being well prepared and will not flounder in court.
Among the most prominent cases are the PEME (Programa Eventual Minimo Empleo or ?Program for Minimum Job Employment?) case from the PLD-Leonel Fernandez Administration and the Civil Aviation program that sought to restore the ability of Dominican airlines to fly to the United States.
Alejandrina German of the PLD says that party lawyers would defend their members, but it will be up to the judiciary to determine whether the individuals are guilty or not. She said that the cases are being presented now to thwart the soaring popularity of former President Leonel Fernandez and that the party would not be intimidated.
