Follow the traffic rules, or else

Metropolitan Transport Authority (AMET) agents have upped the number of fines imposed and vehicles confiscated for violations of Traffic Law 241-64 in recent weeks. Go through a red light, drive without a valid license or under the effects of narcotics or alcohol, and you risk having your vehicle confiscated until you pay the fine, as reported in Dario Libre. The newspaper points out that the confiscation of vehicles for these violations is not stipulated in Law 241-64. A spokesman for AMET says that confiscating the vehicle is the only way to ensure that the violator pays the fine. As reported, 887,000 drivers have been fined in the past two years and a half, and 87,000 vehicles have been retained to oblige the rapid payment of the fine.
