Vice President admits legal system failed

The Vice President, Margarita Cedeno de Fernandez, met with the Minister of Education, Josefina Pimentel in Santiago yesterday, Wednesday 3 October, to presented prizes of computers and money to 22 students who had won math, reading and writing competitions. The Vice President spent a few minutes with each of the winners and invited them to take part in the Literacy Plan starting on 7 January

When asked about the recent murder of Miguelina Altagracia Martinez, aged 31, who had tried to report her ex-husband for violence on 18 occasions, Cedeno de Fernandez called on everyone to confront domestic violence.

She went on to say that there had been a failure in the court system as her attacker had been involved in similar cases in Bonao and Santiago, and that the prosecutors had also failed by underestimating the scale of the problem.

Jonathan Minaya Torres, accused of stabbing his ex-wife to death, was sentenced to one year in jail on remand yesterday, Wednesday 3 October. The court hearing took place in the Jose Maria Cabral and Baez hospital where he is recovering from the beating he received from his victim’s neighbors.
