According to Senator Wilton Guerrero, Captain Anthony Eduardo Leyba Perez who was killed in a plane accident in Constanza earlier this week, had a fortune of over 100 million pesos and was linked to well-known drug dealers.
Although Guerrero congratulated the National Drug Control Department (DNCD) on its work on the case so far, questioned that the president of the DNCD, Rolando Rosado Mateo, could call Leyba Perez a hero. Rosado Mateo had said during a press conference on Tuesday that Leyba was acting as an infiltrator for the anti-drug agency.
The PLD Senator from Peravia asked the Attorney General to extend the investigations in the case as he was sure that there were more facts and more people involved in the international drugs ring.
Guerrero says that Leyba Perez himself had not been under investigation in this country, but that he was one of 54 children of Tomas Leyba who drove a public shared taxi in Duverge, Independencia. Apparently he was a police officer who left the force under unclear circumstances and went to the USA where he became a drug dealer, then returned to the Police Force here, reaching the rank of Captain, in what Guerrero believed to be record time.
He went on to say that while only a sergeant in the police force, Leyba Perez built a small palace in Duverge, had luxury cars, including a Hummer, and that according to rumor he had various apartments in Santo Domingo and a farm in Constanza not far from the site of the plane crash that cost him his life.
He said that no one in Duverge thought he worked for the police, and they only saw him associating with drug dealers.
Diario Libre reports that Leyba owned property worth millions. Residents in the Ensanche Ozama area where the late agent had a building with four apartments at the same address the DNCD recognizes as his domicile said that they knew Leyba as a man with “lots of money.”
Major General Rolando Rosado Mateo said in a press conference that the DNCD would ensure the welfare of the late agent’s mother and would pass on the social security benefits the agent paid to his widow and son.
