In their country’s presidential election held yesterday Sunday 7 October, Venezuelans living in the Dominican Republic showed a majority preference for opposition candidate Henrique Capriles. Only 22% of the 492 voters, of 675 registered to vote, cast their vote for the President Hugo Chavez. Chavez was elected to lead Venezuela until 2019. The vote was 376 in favor of Capriles, with 76.42%, and 113 votes for Chavez, or 22.97%.

Hundreds of Chavez dissidents have moved their families and capital to the Dominican Republic.

President Hugo Chavez won the presidential elections with 54.42% of the vote, according to the National Electoral Council (CNE). Chavez obtained 7,444,082 votes against his principal rival Henrique Capriles, who obtained 6,151,544 votes (44.97%), according to the official information with 90% of the votes counted. The Venezuelan president, the founder of so-called “21st Century Socialism,” thus achieved his third reelection and will govern until 2019, a total of more than 20 years in power, as his first election victory was in 1998. The CNE also reported that the participation rate in this election was 80.94% of the electorate, the highest in the recent history of Venezuela.
