Giuseppe Dellisanti, president of Bioen Srl, an Italian company specializing in renewable energy generated by anaerobic digestion of biomass, announced plans to set up an operation in the DR, together with Turtle Company Business. Bioen already operates in Brazil and Sierra Leone. The process involves converting biomass from animal manure and urban, agricultural and food industry waste to energy. The company is proposing to install a generator plant in Cumayasa, La Romana that will use solid waste to generate electricity, a US$212 million investment. As reported in Hoy, during a press conference called to announce the plan, company executives did not specify the generation capacity of the proposed plant. They said it would be capable of processing 250,000 tons of waste. “The process does not use combustion or incineration, and this guarantees clean energy,” said Dellisanti. He said feasibility tests would be carried out in January.
