The father of a biology student at a regional branch of the state university (UASD) is suing Professor Candelario Pena Cruz for not having reported one of his son’s grades on time. Agustin Ramiro Gervacio sued the professor on behalf of his son, Geronis Gervacio Lalane, a student at Centro Universitario Regional del Nordeste (CURNE) in San Francisco de Macoris. Pena Cruz is accused of negligence and damage.
The professor said that the university has a procedure for publishing the grade, with which he complied. But the father thought that the May to August wait was more than the prudent time to fulfill the requirement. The subject was passed with 84%.
Pena Cruz said that lawyers for both parties are holding discussions in an attempt to settle the case before it is heard in court. Lawyers Hector Manuel Castellanos Abreu, Alberto Vasquez de Jesus and Juan Carlos Cruz del Orbe are representing the Gervacios who are suing for RD$2 million, in the case. Professor Candelario Pena Cruz has asked his colleagues, the Law School professors to take on his defense.
News commentators and public interactive commentary filled the airwaves yesterday with comments that such a delay in publishing grades is all too common an occurrence at the very bureaucratic state university. The delays frequently cause students to miss a semester. As reported in telenord.com.do, Pena Cruz published the grade after receiving a call from the student notifying him of the suit.
