New PRD group to contest leadership

Several leading members of the PRD have decided to join forces in search of preserving party unity and developing a new political movement to present alternatives to the leaderships of Miguel Vargas and Hipolito Mejia. Former vice-presidential candidate Luis Abinader, party general secretary Orlando Jorge Mera, Alfredo Pacheco, Eduardo Sanz Lovaton, Jose Leonel Cabrera, Tony Pena Guaba, Eligio Jaquez and Guido Gomez Mazara have been meeting since the end of September in order to take the first steps to what will be called the “Third Way,” “the New Majority” and what they themselves are calling “Ni Ni” meaning “neither with Miguel nor Hipolito.” The new group, according to Diario Libre, seeks to present unique candidates for the party presidency, the secretary general and the secretary for organization in the ordinary convention. The leaders made the most of the debate on the fiscal reform in order to hold a public press conference yesterday, Tuesday 16 October, where they stated that as the principal opposition party, the PRD should take a stance against the taxes that the government is proposing.
