The rector of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD), Mateo Aquino Febrillet, says that if the state university does not receive its 5% of the 2013 National Budget the university authorities would take the case to the Constitutional Court. He said that the Constitution makes it clear that the state will finance public education and that it should be free.
He said that the university simply could not function with the 2.5% it has received and that to fulfill what is needed for 2013 will cost an estimated RD$13 billion. This year they had RD$5.2 billion. He argued this is why the university does not appear in international rankings.
Addressing a meeting with the Economic and Social Council held at PUCMM University, the rector said that the plans for 2013 include improving teaching quality, changing the technology platform, improving classrooms, increasing the number of lecturers with doctorates and investing more in research.
