Police chief says DR ‘too soft’ on foreigners

The National Police Chief, Major General Jose Armando Polanco Gomez, has told reporters from the nation’s newspapers that the country is too easy on foreigners who do not follow the rules or the good customs of the Dominican Republic. El Nuevo Diario says that the general gave the example of what he described as “the dangerous cult” run by a group of Germans who had been living in Sosua since 2002 and whose members fired upon a Police patrol. The incident resulted in the death of one of the Germans, Peter Demetrick. The Police found an arms cache as well as military gear. Polanco Gomez said that this is not a problem with the Justice System, but more to do with what he described as “the Dominican nature” – a reference to the national reputation for friendliness. He told reporters that he would hold a press conference on Friday, 26 October to reveal more details of the case.
