The rains caused havoc with the schedule of the Dominican Winter League Baseball Championship on Friday 26 October, and this week will see several make-up games played. On Saturday, The Gigantes del Cibao got five excellent innings from lefty Chase Wright and defeated the Tigres del Licey 6-1 in the Quisqueya Stadium in Santo Domingo.
In San Pedro de Macoris, the Leones del Escogido overcame a 0-5 deficit that the Estrellas Orientales created in the first five innings. However, after going up 7-5 by the ninth inning the relief pitching of the Leones could not hold back the potent bats of the Estrellas and after tying the game in the ninth inning, the Estrellas scored once more, leaving the Leones with nothing to do but walk off the field, losers 8-7.
In the Cibao, the Aguilas Cibaenas were victors, 3-2, over the Toros del Este, thanks to 6 very good innings from pitcher Lorenzo Barcelo and timely hits by Tony Abreu who went 3 for 4.
On Sunday 28 October, Jimmy Paredes hit a grand slam homerun in the ninth inning to give the Gigantes a dramatic 4-1 victory over the Aguilas Cibaenas. Starling Marte’s great 4 for 5 hitting guided the Leones del Escogido to a 10-8 victory over their eternal rivals of the Tigres del Licey. Mauro Gomez also contributed with 4 RBIs. The Estrellas defeated the cellar dwelling Toros del Este in La Romana, 5-0.
