US to keep an eye on DR-CAFTA

The United States Embassy in Santo Domingo says that although each country has its own laws and rights, the US government would keep a watchful eye to ensure that agreements were being complied with including the Free Trade Agreement between the United States, Central America and the Dominican Republic known as DR-CAFTA.

The statement was made to Diario Libre in response to concerns that legislators in the Dominican Republic will approve a measure to tax internet purchases below US$200 which violates the free trade rules as agreed by DR-CAFTA. The measure was included in the tax overhaul sent by the Senate to the Chamber of Deputies. The bill was passed without changes in the Chamber of Deputies, where the ruling PLD party legislators hold the majority.

The American Chamber of Commerce in the Dominican Republic has asked Congress members to remember that they should comply with international agreements when the time comes to vote on the issue.
