Senators report spate of thefts

Several vehicles parked in the Hotel Hispaniola were broken into on Tuesday night. The hotel is home to a number of provincial senators and it appears that their vehicles had been purposefully targeted. PRD Senator of Valverde, C?sar Augusto (Yayo) Mat?as, had his SUV’s rear window broken and two Uzi submachine guns and a briefcase containing checkbooks and official documents were taken. The senator explained that the firearms had been assigned to him by the Armed Forces for his personal security. Puerto Plata Deputy Iliana Newman also had her car broken into and documents taken. Three people are in custody, including the parking lot?s car cleaner and two security guards. Meanwhile, the PRD Senators for Barahona and San Juan have reported break-ins and items stolen from their respective offices.
