The National Police (PN) have arrested two people and is pursuing three others who are accused of the murder of a husband and wife and their two maids in a house in the Evaristo Morales residential area in the capital on Tuesday, 13 November, as reported in Diario Libre. The criminals also stole jewelry, a .38 cal revolver and about US$13,000. The arrested pair are Julio Montero Montero (El Chulo) and his girlfriend, Josefina de los Santos Valenzuela (La Sophy), a niece of the maid Lourdes Valenzuela, who was found dead in the Mirador Norte Park in Villa Mella and is thought to have planned the robbery. Reportedly she was murdered when not agreeing to violence regarding her employers.
In the meantime, the fugitives are Robert Quezada (El Compa), Luis Miguel Sanchez Montero (Luisito) and Alfredo Casilla. The Police are asking these men to turn themselves in “in order to avoid clashes that cause even greater sorrow to Dominican families.”
The victims of the crime were an elderly woman, Teresa Batista Matos de Vicioso, 83 and her maid Josefina Suero, 43, who were murdered in the house in the Evaristo Morales neighborhood, and Jose Vicioso, 86, Teresa’s husband, who died of his injuries on Monday 19 November and was buried today at the Puerta del Cielo cemetery.
According to La Sophy, who is being held at Police Headquarters for arraignment this morning, Wednesday 21 November together with El Chulo, her aunt Lourdes had called her and told her that “there was money in the house where she was working,” and asked her “to find somebody and plan a robbery.” She said that she immediately contacted El Chulo and he then found the others.
La Sophy says that they arrived at the house at 9pm at night in a gold colored car and blew the horn (the accused murderer knew the address because she had visited her aunt some months before). At this signal, Lourdes came out and got in the car. This is when the argument began. The men with La Sophy proposed that they had to beat up the old people and the other maid, which Lourdes opposed. In the face of this situation, they left the house, taking Lourdes with them. On the way the argument got more heated and the men who El Chulo had found are thought to have shot and killed Lourdes. Later, they dumped her body in the bushes near the Mirador de Norte Park in Villa Mella.
This did not stop them, however. They returned to the house and again blew the horn and the maid Josefina Suero opened the gates. They entered the house and La Sophy clubbed Suero. Then her companions tied her up, which they also did to the elderly couple. Nonetheless, not content with tying them up, they also beat them, desperate because they could not find the money.
La Sophy said that after searching “carefully” they found some US$13,000, of which she got US$2,000. The rest of the money is supposedly in the possession of the fugitives.
With the money that they received, La Sophy and her partner bought clothes, shoes and new articles for their house. Among the items presented by the Police after the press conference when the arrests were announced yesterday, Tuesday 20 November there was a refrigerator, a 32-inch plasma television set, a living room set and a bedroom set, a fan and a mini-music component set. The Police said that the accused sold some of the jewelry that was stolen and changed US$2,000 in the “Wascar” pawn shop in Villa Consuelo, which was recovered together with RD$30,000 that La Sophy had when she was arrested.
In their attempt to evade police pursuit, they went to Hondo Valle in San Juan de la Maguana, where La Sophy and the other two maids were born and raised. There the couple was seen by Carlos Augusto Montero Montero (El Gringo) who was arrested on Monday, 19 November and who will be presented by the District Attorney as a witness for the prosecution. According to the Police, in the area of San Juan, La Sophy and El Chulo sought out the services of a “witch” or shaman to cast a “spell” that would protect them from police pursuit. From there, they returned to Santo Domingo and went to the community of La Cuaba, in Pedro Brand, where they were arrested. The Police are trying to establish whether the defendants have any criminal records.
