US Ambassador praises Danilo

Speaking at the American Chamber of Commerce monthly luncheon event in celebration of Thanksgiving, the United States ambassador in the DR, Raul Yzaguirre, said that in his opinion President Danilo Medina’s first 100 days in government had been positive and intelligent, adding that the US respects the efforts he has made and are prepared to help him.

When asked about the proposal to install X-ray machines in the country’s ports, Yzaguirre said he was in favor of all measures that help stop the flow of drugs into the country as it was a serious problem. The ambassador said that the US recognized that although the Dominican Republic was not the major route for the flow of drugs, once the flow from Central America was stemmed, the trend would be for the drugs to divert via the Caribbean and the Dominican Republic.

He did say, however that corruption continued to be an issue facing the country which was preventing companies from investing, although he recognized that the government were implementing initiatives which he believed would have a positive effect on the fight against corruption.
