The deputy operations director of the Essential Medicines Program (Promese/Cal), Miguel Urena, says that the Dominican Republic is one of the main countries in the region where there are the highest amount of fake pharmaceuticals although the exact figures are unknown.
He said that throughout the whole of Latin America between 25 and 28 percent of medicines in circulation are false, whereas in the United States and Canada it is only 12 per cent.
He went on to say that it is a highly organized crime and it is hard to tell if the medicines are false or not, but that there needs to be an investigation into the situation.
