Femicides decreasing

The authorities say that the number of women killed by their partners and former partners in the country has shown a significant decline, with November registering 47 fewer femicides over the same period in 2011. In October there were 15 deaths and November 6.

Attorney General Francisco Dominguez Brito said that the new measures they were taking across the whole country, coordinating with institutions like the Ministry for Women, the Ministry of Interior and Police, the National Police and the Ministry for Public Health had made the difference.

He said that the priority was to save women who felt threatened by their partners or former partners and that the previous system where women personally had to tell them that a complaint had been made against them was not only ludicrous but also put their lives in danger.

Assistant Attorney General Roxanna Reyes has also announced that since the end of October, the help centers for violence against women have extended their opening hours, the response has been more rapid and they are also geared up for December, which is historically a month where there is more violence against women.
